OPEN SENSE, COMMON SOURCE

An event that initiated an early collection of free weaving instructional videos.

I do not (yet) consider myself a tapestry weaver, but I have tentatively started adding frame loom tapestry to the workshops that I offer. This is because it is the quickest and most accessible way for many people to weave. I owe a lot to all of my weaving teachers, but here I’d like to name the generous weavers that taught me tapestry, Erin Riley and Robbie LaFleur. I am also incredibly inspired by the tapestry works of my friends Bryana Bibbs and Allie Dudley.

These videos included are by no means the best tapestry instruction you will find. I encourage you to find the creators that make content that makes the most sense to you.

I am excited to start finding ways to document my teaching practice online so that I can direct those that I meet to one place. I used to find resources individually for those that would ask me about how to start weaving, but this way everything is cohesive.

Please note that the language I use for certain things may vary from what you hear about tapestry elsewhere. This is not the form of weaving that I spend the most time with.

Image Description: Digital event graphic in portrait orientation. At top center, the title of the event, “OPEN SENSE, COMMON SOURCE” appears in red, capital letters. A rectangular frame with white fill and rounded corners sits behind, along with a second larger “COMMON SOURCE” in faint gradient echoing the title. At bottom left, white text in all caps with red and green airbrush glow read: “OUTDOOR ART WORKSHOPS BY: FEINI YIN & GARY MCCREADY / LARS SHIMABUKURO / TARATHORN BOONNGAMANONG”. At bottom right, green italic text in all caps reads “SOUTHEAST ASIAN MARKET @ FDR PARK / SATURDAY, AUGUST 10TH 10AM - 6PM” inside a yellow oval text frame with a light purple glow at the edges. A green sugarcane stalk runs upward through the center of the graphic, against a yellow to purple gradient. A lattice trim in yellow, white, and seafoam green runs around the border.

Join us for Open Sense, Common Source, a series of workshops developed by FORTUNE, in partnership with William Way LGBT Community Center. We will host our first daylong program on Saturday, August 10 at the Southeast Asian Market in FDR Park, a place we’ve long admired.

At the market, we will present the work of three queer Asian artists based here in Philly, who work in material ecologies of multiple senses — and who orient toward stories in ways that are playful and plentiful, tactile and colloquial. Feini Yin (in collaboration with Gary McCready), Lars Shimabukuro, and Tarathorn Boonngamanong will share their practices, thoughtfully sourced and expansive in course. More workshop details to come!

Open Sense, Common Source considers sustainability not only of land and sea — but also of stories, built from local economies and kindred exchanges, in communion with other teachers and learners. Come for these workshops, occurring 10a–6p as the marketday goes, and do stay for the abundant offerings of other SEAMarket vendors.

8/11 - Two more finishing option videos will be uploaded in the next few days :)
