cast paper, handbuilt ceramic sculpture
This piece is dedicated to my grandmother, grandfather, and great-grandmother, whose lives were connected by a specific incident of domestic violence. As a child I was always jealous of the care they were able to have with their gardens and plants, which I felt like they were unable of sharing with me. The paper piece was cast over a letter written to my grandfather after his passing this last January, but I found the movement on the back of the piece more interesting. I think this piece is a good example of how my work exists in a space of meditation or mourning, but using craft and material as a constraint.
21.5” x 20.5” x .75”
cast denim, linen, abaca and cotton dyed with marigolds, kozo dyed with cyanotype, steel inclusions
This paper piece was cast in a wooden mold, and I used plasticine modeling clay to form the interior ridges. The interior negative space was formed around a found piece of steel. I think of my cast paper pieces as sketches.

cast paper, Thai kozo, flax, and pineapple fibers, indigo, handwoven strap, cast glass hook
34” x 60” x 20"

With this piece I was playing with the idea of a net that is holding a lot of weight. After dyeing Thai kozo and flax pulp in an indigo vat, I pressed the pulp into a foam mold that was milled on a CNC. The handwoven strap is woven in a pattern that mimics the pattern on the casting.
